Well written. You and I diasgree on some things, I certainly didn't vote for President Obama, but like you, now that he is president he is in my prayers. He is my president now too regardless of how I voted. Great letter!
One of your Anonymous visitors made a cut on you for being a Christian and supporting stem cell research. Apparently, they don't that stem cells can also be harvested from the umbilical cord blood after baby is born...It would be nice for people to know what they are talking about before they judge someone!!!
Mellissa, I too, was a bit taken back by the response of that person. I had several replies that I wanted to make in regards to Christianity and judgement, however, I chose not to and to just let the comment stand. However, I am very pleased that you spoke up and said something. I actually find it commical, and I'm so happy you brought up the fact about umbilical cord blood, my step-dad and I were just talking about that this week.
I was thinking about banking little G-man cord blood, but the cost is just too prohibitive...I wish there was a way we could have donated it...sigh. My DH has had type I diabetes since he was 12, that cord blood could have helped in so much medical research. Hugs to you!
Actually, I do know a little about what I'm talking about. I was referring to embryonic stem cell research. Now that the ban has been lifted on this legislation, scientists have already stated that it will lead to the harvesting of human embryos for types of research other than stem cell. I know about umbilical cord stem cells and also what has recently come out about human skin cells being used for the same things, but it all leads back to embyronic stem cell research. The God I serve and worship on a daily basis is pro life.
I'm sure no one here is "pro-abortion" but we live in a society of a growing trend of pro-choice. As you choose life, I choose for you to have that choice. To say scientist are" harvesting" embryos, is just the scare tactics that have been used so long to stifle funding for this research.
We need to end that era of scare tactics, I believe if we educated people on the benefits of embryonic stem cell research instead of making it a tabu phrase, people could begin to make there own decisions on the issue.
Just as sex ed in schools, we could reduce the abortion rate along with the teen pregnancy rate with educating our children on both the consequences and how to protect them selves, a simple pledge to "not do it" just doesn't work.
This article was an educated one, heart felt, and christian. And she seems like a good christian.
I just read back over what I last wrote, because I just wanted to make sure, and sure enough, I couldn't find in any line where I wrote anything about being pro abortion. I wouldn't dare even go there! Using human embryo stem cells for research is not pro life. That is all I was stating. This will be the last of my comments. My apologies to the writer of the original letter. Yes it was very heart felt and I do agree with what you had to say, I just can't agree with using human embryos for research. Now that the ban on the legislation has been lifted, it opens the door for government funding on this type of research. And yes, they have to be harvested. How else will the research be done? It is truly sad that not only did he lift the ban on that, but he also lifted the ban on abortion regulations. Now a woman can have an abortion at any week, no matter what. What does that say about our President and how he values "human" life? It is "human" embyros that are being tested, correct? There are so many other ways to cure horrible diseases that having to destroy lives.

To say you are a Christian and that you believe in God, and then to say you believe in stem cell research...
